Not Sure Where To Spend Your Next Vacation? Check Out Manshausen Island!

When
you think of a European vacation, what comes to mind? For some, it’s
going to Paris and visiting the charred remains of the Notre Dame
Cathedral. Too soon? For others, it might be walking around Barcelona
with an upside down map with a perpetual confused expression on your
face. Not because you’re lost or haven’t heard of GPS before, but
because you’re looking for sympathy anyway you can get it. We
aren’t here to write about a conventional travel destination; we
want to open your horizons. So let’s talk about Manshausen Island,
located in the Steigen Archipelago off the coast of Norway. It’s
got the Barents Sea and breathtaking mountains.

Hoping
to do some fishing there? You betcha! Manshausen Island is the ideal
spot for those who know their way around a bucket of chum. In the
summertime, the sandy white beaches are nice for laying out, although
the water tends to be cold throughout the year. So if you are a
penguin or simply get a thrill from icy water, knock yourself out!
Of course, swimming isn’t the only way to enjoy the nature. The
rocky hills provide hiking opportunities for beginners and experts
alike. Once you reach the top, you are rewarded with incredible
views.

Oops.
I forgot to tell you where to stay. I’m such a knucklehead
sometimes. Make your way to the Manshausen Island Resort! Duh, guys!
Located on 55 acres and formerly a trading post, you can book a room
in a series of modern, minimalist bungalows.

Getting
there from Oslo via car/train/ferry will take around 20 hours, but
it’s well worth the lengthy journey. Founded by Børge Ousland, a
renowned polar explorer, the resort was designed by architect Snorre
Stinessen, who for our money has the Norwegianest name in the history
of Norwegian names. Once you arrive, you’re greeted by an old,
fully restored 18th century farmhouse and stone quays. The farmhouse
includes a kitchen and dining area on the first floor and a library
on the second floor where you can come one step closer to
enlightenment.

What
about the rooms themselves? The sea cabins protrude over the island’s
natural topography and contain glass floors and ceilings that allow
you to soak in the surroundings in all its glory, including the
Northern Lights above and the massive sea eagles that inhabit the
area. At the same time, you get to experience all of this while
remaining in a warm, cozy, comfortable shelter. So whether you choose
to go in the winter, spring, summer or fall, you’re in for quite a
sight! The bungalows are extremely functional, with plenty of space
to put your luggage and equipment. Each comes with its own fully
equipped kitchen and dining area, as well as a comfortable bathroom.
Private bungalows can be booked for couples, trios, um…quads (?) or
even families of five while the dormitory is perfect for solo
travelers or those looking to save a few Norwegian kroner. But come
on! If you’re going to Norway in the first place, are you really
all that budget conscious. We would hope not!

One
final, important note: keep in mind that if you do choose to book a
place, you should plan things a bit in advance. When tinkering around
on Booking.com, we found that every single room is booked through the
end of January, more than 3 months after this article was written!
