Covid-19 has been holding a tight grip on society in the last few weeks, and unless you’re in some of the best countries in the world right now, odds are your country is suffering from some version of a lockdown. And while most parts of our social lives have to take the backseat for a few weeks, maybe months, there’s something that we won’t have to give up: museums.
Some world-renowned museums have decided to provide virtual tours of their collections, to help us get through the quarantine without being a danger to our own health or that of people near us. Let’s take a look at some of the museums that are doing this right now, through the use of the Google Arts & Culture app that you can download to your smartphone.
Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam
If you’re interested in some of the famous Dutch painters, this will probably be a great virtual tour for you. Most painters of the Dutch Golden Age have a very big collection in the Rijksmuseum and it’s now even easier to visit.
Guggenheim Museum, New York
Imagine being able to walk down the famous staircase of the Guggenheim museum, without having to actually walk. Now you can be cultural and lazy at the same time, what a time to be alive!
Pergamon Museum, Berlin
Berlin is known for its rich culture, so it would be pretty surprising if none of its ridiculous amount of museums would join in this initiative. The Pergamon is one of the biggest of these museums, and you can now walk through its halls from the comfort of your desk.
Uffizi Gallery, Florence
If there’s ever a country you don’t want to visit right now, it has to be Italy. But it’s also the European country with some of the richest cultural history you can find, so being able to walk through the halls of the Uffizi Gallery, mostly known for housing a lot of de’Medici art, without risking getting infected by Covid-19 is amazing.
British Museum, London
Mostly a historical museum, the British museum is probably mostly known for its Egyptian mummies and huge, huge collection of historical artifact from all periods of our history. It’s a very popular museum, so the virtual tour might be your only shot to visit the exhibitions without being annoyed by the amount of people near you.
Musée d’Orsay, Paris
If you’re into French artists like Guagain or Monet, this virtual exhibition is the one for you. This gallery houses loads of works by French artists from the mid 19th century to the early 20th century. Give it a go!
