We’ve all heard of Bollywood, the place of the most dramatic yet most adorable and musical love stories in film. But did you know that Bollywood isn’t the only movie-making machine in India? In fact, India is the country that makes the most movies in the world. And here we thought it was the US with their Hollywood. But back to India, since there are over 20 languages spoken all over the country it makes sense that there would be movies made in many languages to represent and pleases audiences. Apart from Bollywood which is movies made in Hindi, there’s also Pollywood, Tollywood, and Chhollywood which are all about movies made in Punjabi, Telugu and Chhattisgarhi respectively. Here are more things you didn’t know about it.

1. India Makes More Movies Than US

We mentioned that India
makes the most movies in a year, but let’s compare the numbers, shall we? When
Hollywood produces a maximum of 700 movies a year, India does about 2000. However,
their budgets and ticket prices are smaller and therefore the box offices make
only about 2 billion compared to Hollywood’s 10+billions.

2. Bollywood Films Get More Awards

While we think that
Oscar-winning movies are the ones that get the most awards it’s actually
Bollywood movies that are way more celebrated when it comes to winning awards.
“Titanic” got 10 Oscars and “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” won
a record amount – 11. But that’s nothing in comparison to Bollywood’s “Kaho
Naa… Pyaar Hai”. That movie won 92 awards in various ceremonies and is in the
Guinness book of records thanks to that.

3. Tollywood Star Holds Record For Screen Credits

You might not know who
Brahmanandam Kanneganti but he’s the Tollywood star that holds the record for
most screen credits. While Britain’s Christopher Lee has been in 244 movies in
his lifetime, Brahmanandam has appeared in over a thousand. We don’t know how
he does it, but you’ve got to admit that’s impressive, to say the least.

4. Tollywood Film Was Famous For The Wrong Reasons

The movie Rudhramadevi
was supposed to be super big and impressive because it told the story of one of
the few female rulers of the country and because they got a whole bunch of gold
jewellery worth $700 000 for the actress to wear in the movie. But instead, the
reason it was talked about is that there was a massive theft story, two boxes
of that very expensive and ancient gold jewellery got stolen from the set.

5. Bollywood Star Played A Mother At The age of 13

Sridevi is a Bollywood
legend. She started her career as a child actor but by the age of 13, she was
offered the role of a university student and stepmother. How does a 13-year-old
girl even get a part like that, not to mention actually succeed in playing the
part? But Sridevi did a great job and it was that role that actually propelled
her into stardom. Yeah, that’s very different to Hollywood where they have
30-year-olds playing teenagers on screen, isn’t it? It’s kind of the polar
opposite, isn’t it?

6.Bollywood Star Who’s Actually French

Kalki Koechlin is a Bollywood actress that’s very well known in the Indian showbiz. She has been nominated and won many awards including the National Film Award – which is the most prestigious movie award in India. But what’s funny is that she’s not even Indian.
